Colorectal cancer (CRC) has rapidly become the leading cause of cancer-related death in men under 50 and the second leading cause for women. While rates are dropping among older populations due to routine screenings, diagnoses for individuals under age 55 have nearly doubled since the 1990s. Today, 1 in 5 new colorectal cancer patients is under the age of 55.
What is Causing the Rise?
Researchers do not yet have a single definitive answer, but three out of four young patients have no family history of the disease. This points heavily to modern environmental, generational, and lifestyle shifts:
- Ultra-Processed Diets: High intake of sugary drinks, fast food, and red/processed meats paired with a severe lack of dietary fiber heavily irritates the digestive tract.
- The Gut Microbiome & DNA Damage: Recent data suggests that early-life exposure to antibiotics, toxins, and microplastics alters gut bacteria. Doctors have found that younger CRC patients are three times more likely to harbor specific strains of E. coli bacteria that produce colibactin, a toxin that directly causes DNA damage in the colon.
- Sedentary Lifestyles: Long hours of sitting during adolescence and young adulthood—whether for desk jobs or screen time—is strongly correlated with early-onset rectal and colon cancers.
- Obesity and Metabolic Changes: Higher rates of childhood and young-adult obesity trigger chronic, low-grade systemic inflammation, which can fuel tumor growth.
Impact on Health Span and Longevity
- Slashed Longevity from Aggressive Disease: Younger adults are far more likely to be diagnosed with advanced, late-stage, and highly aggressive tumors. Because routine screening historically began at older ages, early warning signs in millennials and Gen Z are frequently dismissed by patients and doctors alike. This delay in diagnosis allows the cancer to metastasize, directly reducing long-term survival rates.
- Severely Reduced Health Span: Surviving colon cancer at a young age drastically truncates an individual’s “health span” (the period of life spent in good health). Young survivors must live for decades with the chronic side effects of invasive treatments. These include permanent gastrointestinal dysfunction, the potential life-long need for an ostomy bag, pelvic floor damage, infertility from radiation, and early cardiovascular risks or secondary cancers caused by chemotherapy.
